Sustainable Lifestyles Research Group (SLRG) Workshop | Sustainable Living: myths, meanings and realities [feedly]
The Sustainable Lifestyles Research Group (SLRG) will host a workshop on ‘Sustainable Living: myths, meanings and realities’ in London on 3 June 2014.
Building on over a decade of research, the event aims to synthesise the lessons from the group’s work on developing new understandings of the processes which lead to changes in people’s lifestyles, behaviours and practices. It also intends to offer evidence-based advice to policy-makers hoping to build and nurture more sustainable ways of living.
This stimulating and challenging one-day event is structured under four themes:

Featuring plenary presentations from the SLRG team and panel discussions with invited experts, the day will offer participants the opportunity of gaining an in-depth understanding of key findings of SLRG research and a lively debate about the challenges ahead.
The SLRG aims to develop understandings of the processes which lead to changes in people’s lifestyles, behaviours and practices and also to offer evidence-based advice to policy-makers about realistic strategies to encourage more sustainable lifestyles. Moreover, it strives for building capacity for research in sustainable lifestyles amongst academics, young researchers, practitioners, and user communities.
The group’s research portfolio comprises around a dozen projects within four main research clusters:

The SLRG research programme is coordinated from the University of Surrey (Centre for Environmental Strategy) under the direction of Professor Tim Jackson with Ian Christie as the Research Coordinator. Its partners include the University of Bath, Edinburgh University, the University of Sussex, the Institute for Fiscal Studies and Brunel University and it also works closely with non-academic partners including Peterborough City Council, the RSA and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The group receives core funding from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Scottish Government and additional funding for individual projects from the European Commission and the ESRC.

Green academies: whole institution approaches to embedding education for sustainable development in the curriculum

The workshop is designed for people interested in developing whole institutional approaches to ESD in the curriculum– or embedded ESD more broadly than at present within their institution. The focus is a critical exploration of aspects of the work of Green Academy institutions and the lessons we can learn from them, in particular the role of students as agents of change, and the role of whole institution approaches.
Grass root and green shoots: a green academy inspired ESF initiative
16 May 2014, Canterbury Christ Church University, Blake Hall College, London
This workshop focuses on an innovative approach to sustainability and environmental responsibility developed at Canterbury Christ Church University known as the 'Futures Initiative' (FI). Delegates will be introduced to some of the different initiatives which have been introduced across the university, the philosophy behind them and some of the challenges which have emerged in their implementation. These examples will provide delegates with the chance to reflect on how a bottom-up or grass-roots approach to embedding sustainability might work within their own institutions. Through feedback and interaction through the day, the Canterbury team will also be given a unique opportunity to reflect on their own progress.
Sustainability culture by a thousand cuts: an integrated whole institution approach to greening your academy

This workshop will explore an approach to embedding sustainability into the culture of a University utilising multiple 'entry points' to make sustainability part of every aspect of an institution's operations. This workshop with a difference, will take a hands on approach to exploring sustainability at Keele University. We will spend the morning out and about exploring sustainability education in practice and student sustainability projects across the Keele campus. In the afternoon we will be based at Keele Sustainability Hub for sessions around: sustainability leadership, vision and resourcing; formal curriculum strategies; ESD case studies from a range of disciplines; and the role of the Student's Union and Curriculum Development Team in leading informal and co-curricular sustainability education initiatives.
The Worcester sustainability model now and the future: maintaining momentum from the green academy

This workshop will share some of the methods adopted by the University of Worcester (UW) as a prompt for discussion, particularly focussing on development of a cross-institution multi-disciplinary Sustainability Elective Module which has been adopted. The workshop will bring together academics and students from a range of disciplines to discuss:
- the Worcester Sustainability Elective – ideas and reflections;
- good practice from the range of disciplines in attendance;
- examples of good practice in supporting students' development/ employability;
- to demonstrate the University Sustainability Elective public-facing website which will be used as a portal to maintain dialogue following the symposium;
- institutional support funds for sustainability.
INSPIRE, the green academy initiative and the sustainability skills survey – 2 years on
23 June 2014, University of Wales Trinity Saint David
The focus of the event will be to provide an insight into the work of embedding embed sustainability throughout all aspects of UW:TSD's delivery over the past two years. Through the university's participation in the Green Academy programme, it has developed a systemic approach to embedding sustainability throughout its curriculum and in all of its practice starting from first principles. The work identified opportunities for new curricula and research and engaged staff on what it means to have sustainability as a core value and strategic priority. Importantly, this project helped engender greater enthusiasm and support for the agenda.
The seminar will provide an overview of this work and highlight how it is helping wider organisations develop the in depth knowledge they need to take forward the sustainability agenda. The seminar will also provide an opportunity for university staff to highlight how they have taken sustainability forward within their roles.

re: HEFCE Leadership, Governance and Management project: Leading Curriculum Change for Sustainability
We would like to share news with you regarding outcomes from the HEFCE LGM-funded UK project on ESD and Quality, which completed in autumn 2012.
At its final meeting, the project’s Expert Advisory Board recommended that the project legacy should be developed through: i) an inter-agency event to promote greater sector-wide collaboration on ESD; ii) contributions as appropriate to QAA’s work to develop guidance and frameworks for ESD; and iii) strategic dissemination of project insights both in the UK and internationally.
In response to this, the following activities have taken place:
- QAA’s national guidance on ESD: members of the project team were invited to join the working group convened by QAA and HEA to develop national guidance for teaching staff on ESD - and to present insights from the HEFCE LGM project as part of the external consultation event for this guidance, which takes place on 5th November in Birmingham.
- HEA Conference and UK Teaching and Learning Forums: we hosted a discussion panel at the annual HEA Conference in July, themed around students participation in shaping the curriculum and featuring the HEFCE project work alongside the influential NUS and HEA research findings over the past 3 years into student demand for ESD. This was well attended and most importantly had strong contributions from excellent student panellists: Dom Anderson from the NUS and Mike Williamson from sparqs (Student Participation in Quality Scotland). Project partners have also presented at conferences held by the QAA, Association for Learning and Development in HE, Society for Research into HE, Leadership Foundation for HE, Royal Geographical Society and EAUC.
- International Discussions: We had opportunities to bring the project issues to a wider international audience at the World Environmental Education Conference in Marrakech in June, where we organised a roundtable session to debate issues around ESD and quality with perspectives from Greece (with Prof Michael Scoullos) and Spain (with Prof Javier Benayas del Alamo) and a range of contributors from different regions – with lively discussion and plenty of opportunity to share materials and ideas. In addition, Mr Anthony McClaran, CEO of the UK QAA, presented the project at the international quality assurance agencies conference (INQAAHE) in Taiwan this year. The level of international interest in this strategic ESD agenda at both events was notable and the project features in a forthcoming UNU publication on the transformation of HE towards sustainable development linked to the Rio+20 Treaty on HE.
4. New Publication on ESD and Quality: the project team was invited to contribute to a special issue of the Curriculum Journal, titled Education for Sustainable Development as the DESD Approaches 2014: What Have We Achieved and Ways Forward? The HEFCE project has been part of an increasing and encouraging momentum around ESD in the HE sector in the last few years, with interest growing among all key sector agencies. We look forward to the outcomes of the QAA consultation and other key initiatives such as the NUS Green Fund projects, in helping to raise the stakes in this important area of work.
