organised by

The Higher Education Research Group

(Institute for Education, Community and Society, The University of Edinburgh)

in partnership with

The Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE)

Higher education matters in this world. Indeed, it matters more than ever before in its long history. In the so-called ‘knowledge economy’ and ‘knowledge society’ higher education is high on every government’s agenda.

This conference will seek to explore social justice in and through higher education by examining recent policies and practices in relation to six broad strands of higher education: Research and knowledge mobilisation; Curriculum; Pedagogy; Access and participation; Institutional leadership; Quality and educational development.

Over the two days paper presenters and keynote speakers will seek to analyse the assumptions underpinning policy and practice, arrive at judgements about the extent to which the world is seen to matter and offer suggestions on how things could be different from how they are. Running across these six strands are concerns related to internationalisation, funding, and lifelong learning.

Keynote Speakers

Professor Melanie Walker, Free State University, SA

Professor Monica McLean, University of Nottingham, UK

Professor Jon Nixon, Senior Research Fellow, Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIE), and Honorary Professor, University of Sheffield, UK

Professor Ray Land, Durham University, UK

Fwd: FW: HEFCE project outcomes - Education for Sustainability and Quality

Dear Colleagues,

HEFCE LGM PROJECT OUTCOMES: Education for Sustainable Development and Curriculum Quality

We have recently completed a national HEFCE funded project which introduced Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into education quality agendas. The project successfully engaged with key sector agencies and stakeholders in learning and teaching, and involved five institutions working to progress ESD as an institution-wide curriculum priority.

We would like to share the significant outcomes from this work, which have contributed to a step change in sector attention and inter-agency discussion around the place of ESD as part of the essential contribution that HE can make towards sustainable development, through curriculum innovation and enhancement of the student experience.

1.       Online Guide to Quality and Education for Sustainability in HE:

The core output is the online Guide to Quality and Education for Sustainability in HE, which is now live at: http://efsandquality.glos.ac.uk/. The Guide contains video clips, insights, tips and adaptable tools for institutions to support the use of EfS as a cross-cutting curriculum agenda. The Guide combines lessons from the five institutional pilot projects with a sector-wide view of how ESD connects with quality assurance and enhancement in HE, drawing on the guidance of key partner agencies and expert advisers. The aim in creating this resource was to share practice and insights  about how to bring ESD to life systemically in complex HE institutions, with consideration of some of the academic and leadership issues involved.

2.    Quality Assurance Agency actions:

The QAA has played a critical role in the project, moving ESD more deeply into mainstream education discussions in HE, and has taken two significant steps to advance thinking around ESD. It has included ESD in the UK Quality Code for HE, providing its first point of entry into mainstream quality frameworks as part of the strategic approach to learning and teaching expected of all HE institutions. It has also commissioned the development of a QAA stakeholder-led guidance briefing on ESD, which will be an important tool to improve understanding and engagement, for national subject benchmarking committees, professional bodies, external examiners, directors of learning and teaching, and collaborative partners.

3.       Inter-agency collaboration on ESD:

Through the project work at sector level, connections have been forged with key forums and agencies connected with the curriculum, leadership, student perspectives and professional practice.  Several actions will follow, to take the next steps in engaging stakeholders with ESD in relation to their core areas of work. These national agencies and funding councils plan to engage collaboratively on ESD to continue this line of work, with the intention to hold a sector-wide event in 2013.

We hope that colleagues will value the development work carried out through this project and we would be glad to have your feedback on the online Guide.

With best wishes,

Forthcoming ESD Events

Embedding sustainability into the undergraduate law curriculum

Date:  Tuesday 11th December 2012

Start Time: 10:00 am

Location/venue: Nottingham Law School Nottingham Trent University Burton Street Nottingham , England, NG1 4BH

Adopting the broad definition of sustainability, this workshop supports discussion about embedding sustainability-related issues into the law degree. Taking a themed approach to the law subjects, there will be presentations and discussion about sustainability in law modules, loosely grouped into public law, obligations, international and property.

There will be a single focus of the event, to discuss the embedding of sustainability into the law undergraduate curriculum.  The coverage of the event, however, will be very wide. The width starts with the adoption of the widest possible definition of sustainability, embracing aspects of social, economic and environmental development. The introductory session will encourage delegates to think laterally within and beyond their subject specialisms to consider weaving a sustainability perspective into existing taught modules (e.g. the sustainability of the rule of law on a global scale) and potentially new modules (e.g. the sustainability of the traditional legal profession and legal funding).

The short individual presentations on the subject specific, sustainability-related issues will be led by academic colleagues from Nottingham Law School but the delegates will be encouraged to share ideas during the day to encourage best practice and cross-institutional germination of ideas. Some delegates may be from HEIs who have risen to the sustainability challenge, others may be taking first steps. The event is designed to be supportive, iterative and collegiate.

Design for Sustainability Educators Network:

What is the role of fashion education?

Tuesday 7 December, 4.30pm – 6.00pm

Room 105 London College of Fashion, 20 John Princes Street, London W1G 0BJ

The Centre for Sustainable Fashion at London College of Fashion is holding a series of events to debate and raise the profile of design for sustainability in fashion education. This will mark a first step in establishing a UK network of fashion educators to debate and practice design for sustainability. This event is open to fashion educators from all institutions.

What is the role of fashion education?

Dilys Williams, Dr Kate Fletcher and invited guests will be analysing the role of universities in nurturing individuals for a future fashion industry. What should we be teaching fashion students and how? How important is a student's wellbeing in their university career? Is it the university's role to consider this? Are fashion students leaving university with the right skills and attributes? What will fashion education look like in the future? What pressures are universities subject to?

Please feel free to pass this invitation on to any colleagues interested in this event or future Sustainability Educators Network events.

 Registration is essential at:  http://www.sustainable-fashion.com/education-network/

Conference Call: 17th EAUC Annual Conference

17 – 19 April 2013, The University of Nottingham

The EAUC annual conference always involves a strong ESD component.  Having spoken to others in the ESD community there is a desire for ESD to have an even higher profile at the 2013 conference with progressive sessions that cut across the traditional boundaries of learning & teaching, research, estates, student engagement, business & community engagement.  If you have any ideas you would like to discuss in terms of a coordinated approach to sessions development or are interested in cross organisation to multi-institutional collaboration please get in touch via sustainability@heacademy.ac.uk.

EAUC Open call for Conference sessions
The EAUC need to ensure that they deliver an all-round programme which is suitable for delegates – whichever sustainability journey they are on – be that "starting out" (new to the topic), "on the road" (some experience but looking for more advanced options) or "more advanced" (competent but looking for new approaches).  EAUC Members and partners are key to providing these sessions/workshops to share their own knowledge with others and to spark discussion and debate. This is your opportunity to help carve out the content of the 2013 Conference by suggesting these potential sessions.

It's now your chance to inspire others and play a real part in helping the sector advance their knowledge and skills. If your session proposal is selected by the EAUC panel, you'll receive 10% off your delegate package plus the knowledge that you've helped others achieve excellence. Submit your proposal by 30 November.

Call for Papers

16th Conference of the European Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production (ERSCP) and the 7th Conference of the Environmental Management for Sustainable Universities (EMSU) series

June 4 to 7, 2013 in Istanbul, Turkey

Call for Papers for the joint ERSCP-EMSU 2013 Conference to be held in Istanbul, Turkey. We invite authors to prepare original articles, state of the art reviews, or case studies for the European Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Consumption and Production (ERSCP) & The Environmental Management for Sustainable Universities (EMSU).

The EMSU stream will focus on the roles of Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs), which, have been at the forefront in creating and changing paradigms, and educating future decision-makers, entrepreneurs, and academic leaders. Recently, HEIs with fore- sight and leadership are progressing effectively in adopting and weaving ESD into their curricula, research, and outreach and into their campus operations. Many are increasingly collaborating with other universities to make SD an integral part of their institutional framework through on-campus life experiences, and by planning and providing 'Educate-the-Educators' programs.

To face the present and future challenges, HEIs have an imperative to become effective 'societal sustainability' change agents, hence faculty, students and staff must increasingly work collaboratively to advance and provide the supportive context for the development and nurturing of new ideas, by working with the following issues:

 a. Ensuring that the needs of present and future generations can be better understood and built upon, through professionals who are well versed in SD;

b. Helping make the transition to 'sustainable societal patterns', as indicated in their declarations, charters, partnerships and conferences; and

c. Empowering university leaders, students and staffs to catalyze and implement new paradigms, to help to ensure that SD is integrated systematically as the 'Golden Thread' throughout the entire university system.

Format and Procedures for Submission of Papers

Extended abstracts of 400-500 words are invited in response to this Call for Papers. The abstracts must be prepared in English.

Please submit your abstracts on http://www.erscp-emsu2013.org by November 30, 2012.

By December 15, 2012, after scientific review of the abstracts, the authors of the selected abstracts will be invited to develop and to submit full papers by March 15, 2013.

All submissions should be developed based upon the editorial guidelines provided in the instructions for authors for "Journal of Cleaner Production", which can be accessed from the website: http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/ 30440/authorinstructions

What can higher education contribute to improving social mobility in the UK? Two-day residential conference organised by the Higher Education Academy

The Higher Education Academy is pleased to announce a two-day residential conference on 26 and 27 March 2013 at the Macdonald Manchester Hotel, Manchester City Centre to examine the contribution of higher education to improving social mobility.

Higher education has undergone change in all four UK nations as the economy has declined and public sector spending has been reduced.  Issues of social mobility, access, retention, attainment and progression however continue to be important across the UK, within higher education institutions, and for students, their families and society as a whole.

2012-13 marked the beginning of significant changes to the higher education landscape, raising concerns about the future of access and equality within the HE sector and heightening existing fears about stagnating social mobility.   This two-day conference is an opportunity to:

·       Explore how widening-access partnerships and collaboration can be adapted to a more competitive environment and whether new approaches and delivery models are required across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

·       Extend our understanding of the contribution of higher-education providers to improving the retention, attainment and progression of students especially those from lower socio-economic groups, disabled or black and minority ethnic backgrounds in all discipline areas.

·       Review how more equitable access to employment, graduate careers and the professions can be achieved through higher-education pathways, including apprenticeships, study abroad and postgraduate study.

·       Consider the role of students in enhancing the quality and outcomes of the higher education experience for students from under-represented and disadvantaged groups.

·       Examine the actual and projected impacts of changes to the funding of higher education on access, retention, attainment and progression for students from under-represented and disadvantaged groups.

·       Review the needs of part-time students in the current context, including support systems and pedagogy for flexible learning.

The conference includes an exciting array of keynote speakers, panel discussions, workshops, papers and posters designed to inform scholarly debate and provide practical ways forward. Building on the idea of a citizen jury the conference is convening a student jury to provide a student perspective and to listen to the evidence and make suggestions about improving the contribution of HE to upward social mobility for students from underrepresented groups and disadvantaged groups.

The deadline for proposals (papers, workshops and posters) is 12 noon, Friday 30 November 2012.

We hope that you will consider attending, participating and joining the debate.

Call for Presenters at 7th Annual Biomimicry Education Summit, Boston

Who better to talk about biomimicry education than those actually working in the field? That's why we are inviting proposals from teachers for our seventh annual Biomimicry Education Summit next June. Educators working with K-12, university, and informal audiences are invited to present on best practices and help shape the dialogue at the world's only conference for biomimicry educators.

Have you piloted a novel approach to biomimicry education in your classroom? Have your students completed a remarkable project? Do you have a burning question you want to explore in a panel, or a workshop you'd love to offer your colleagues? If so, please consider sharing your wisdom with fellow educators in Boston next June 21-23.

Proposals will be accepted in four categories: paper presentations, panels, workshops, and posters. Those with accepted proposals will receive discounted Summit registration. Submit your proposal online by January 7, 2013.

Finally, I've been cultivating a hairy upper-lip and naked chin through this month for Movember.  If anyone wishes to make a donation, however big or small, please go to: http://mobro.co/simonkemphea.  All donations will be very gratefully received and go to a very good cause.

Apologies for the formatting. No matter what I seem to do with this jiscmail browser these days (unless you are reading this on an apple device apparently) it just destroys the formatting!

If you have any content you would like to include in either the bulletin or newsletter, please email me at: sustainability@heacademy.ac.uk.

Also, please get in touch if you would like to share opinions about Movember, HE development post Rio+20, the green economy and universities, student engagement, discuss other ESD work, ideas for projects, request for contacts, or anything else in our ever-growing world of ESD in Tertiary Education.

Best wishes,

Simon
